Upgrading Wordpress Snafu

After deciding to upgrade Wordpress to the 2.3 version, we downloaded the new files and got to the updating the database step and hit a brick wall with an error message saying you need MySQL version 4.0 or greater.

Our first approach was to get our ISP to upgrade our MySQL version. Well that will take a day or two, (in the meantime the blog is down) so we went about restoring the files that we had backed up. Wow, we actually backed them up!

Researching a little further, we found the notification in the Upgrading WordPress guide:
Before you get started, make sure you meet the minimum requirements. Guess who blew right by that first line in the guide.
To run WordPress your host just needs a couple of things:

  • PHP version 4.2 or greater
  • MySQL version 4.0 or greater

A word for the wise. “Check your server versions before upgrading” and save yourself a headache.

Now we are waiting for our server upgrades and we will try it again.

Our ISP moved us to a newer up to date server yesterday. We re-started the upgrade and all went well.

All of this started when we were looking at Matt Cutts blog post on using Feedburner. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/tips-on-your-google-reader-subscriber-numbers/
So, now we are taking advantage of the Feedburner features.

Another problem just showed up with the upgrade. We were using Jerome’s Keyword Plugin http://vapourtrails.ca/wp-keywords and after researching, we found duplicate content pages in Google so we decided to discontinue using it. We originally did it for Technorati http://technorati.com so we will have to wait and see if it affects our listing on their site.

You need to upgrade the plugin if you want to use it for WordPress 2.0 or higher.

    One more comment.

The Feedburner plugin does a 302 temporary redirect from your local feed URL (http://www.blogwealthwood.com/feed/) to http://feeds.feedburner.com/wealthwood/

Here are 3 links to the best info we could find.
    http://www.problogger.net/archives/2005/06/23/are-you-letting-feedburner-hold-you-hostage/

We have decided to continue with the 203 redirect rather than forcing a 301 redirect back to our site.
