If you’re anything like me I need a couple of different organizers at different places to keep me on schedule. That way if I forget one, I can still stay on task. If you’re fairly organized without the aide of any reminders, you’ve already got one up on the rest of us. Kudos to you!
For the rest of us, especially me, we need a little help. I like to use a personalized leather day planner. What is a unique gift?
What can be more unique than having the person’s initials or name or a meaningful expression engraved or imprinted on a gift? It changes a routine gift into a very personal gift. A wallet is a wallet is a wallet until it is personalized, then it becomes unique. No one in the world has one like it.
In my humble opinion, people who are looking for unique gifts are missing the boat by not searching for personalized gifts. Have you tried searching for a unique gift? If so, you have been bombarded with all of us gift shops. We all think we have “unique” gifts. A few actually do have them. Searching for personalized gifts fairs better, but nowhere as good as search for personalized wallets, or any other “personalized” product.
The key to shopping as we have state before is buying what the recipient wants or likes. Then it is much easier to find something that is unique or personalized.
As a point of interest, in January 2007, 7.8% of Yahoo searches were for unique gifts, 8.1% were for personalized gifts. During the same time period, 5% searches were for unique Christmas gifts and 4.9% of the searches were for personalized Christmas gifts.

Some thoughts on how to select a gift that will be appreciated.
Are you thinking of a gift because you like it? Wrong! Think of a gift the recipient will like. It is for them and their enjoyment! This is my biggest shopping pet peeve. This is the single most important reason the customer service lines at stores are jammed on the day after Christmas!
It is okeydokey to ask them what they might like. Ignore the “I don’t need anything” response. Dig deeper.
What are their hobbies or interests? Hard to go wrong with golf accessories for the golfer or something horse related for horse lovers. It gets easier when you have a couple of specific interests to work with. Try searching for the area of interest followed by gifts (i.e. golf gifts, horse gifts, tennis gifts, etc.).
It doesn’t have to be “unique”. It does have to be related to the interests of the recipient.
Instead of a shopping list with nothing but names on it, try a list with names, interests and gift ideas. Most of us have computers with a spreadsheet capability, a really easy way to organize the gift shopping experience.
Another reason for selecting gifts for the recipient is the hassle they get when they try to return something. Consumer world has a list of return policy limitations for many of the major retailers.
