Great Xmas Gifts: Finding is a Challenge

Finding great Xmas gifts is always a challenge. Once your grandchildren are grown, it can become even more difficult. To make matters worse, you may have more names on your list than money. Fortunately, there are many gifts that you can give that are not only inexpensive, but would be virtually impossible for anyone else to give.

You may have a large box of family pictures in the closet or attic. You could organize some of them into photograph albums as gifts. Include notes that name those in the photographs, the year taken, and the occasion or location if you know. A couple of pages of text describing how the recipient is related to the various people or stories about them might be appreciated as well.

If there is a mother of young children on your list, consider offering her a little pampering. Give a scented candle, bath oil or bubble bath, and fragrant lotions. She may also enjoy an inflatable bath pillow for her tub. To complete the gift, arrange to watch her children so that she has the time to enjoy your gift and perhaps have a nap.

Collect old ties from family members and turn them into “snake” draft blockers. Just stitch the ties to each other, stuff, and sew the ends. Cut a tongue from red felt and add eyes from black felt or purchase eyes from a hobby shop.

Give a detailed history of the family or create a family tree. There are websites that allow you to conduct your research for free. If you know some interesting facts about any of your ancestors, include notes to help bring them to life. Add information about occupations, achievements, or military service in as much detail as possible.

Have you adapted or created special recipes that have long been family favorites? Write them down in an inexpensive journal that has a hard cover and lined pages. Add those passed down to you by your own grandmother or mother. If there are any tips or pointers that would help other cooks achieve better results, include them as well.

Today, people often lack contact information for the extended family, such as uncles, aunts, and cousins. Fill out index cards with relatives’ phone numbers and addresses and then insert, along with alphabetical guides, in a pretty card file. Include the names of young children still living at home on the card for their parents. If desired, add twelve cards at the front labeled by month and record all anniversaries and birthdays in each month.
